Tatarstan government officials and representatives of major firms based in the region have met at a session of the Republic’s Economic Council to discuss steps aimed at supporting Tatarstan’s industry. Tatarstan’s President pointed out in his opening speech that the Republic spent more than RUB 160 bn last year on products brought from abroad, with almost a third of the sum expended on petrochemical products. An additional RUB 200 bn per year is being spent on buying products in other regions of the Russian Federation (RF), with the list of purchases composed mainly of mechanical engineering goods, transport vehicles and food items. In Tatarstan itself, business output totaled just over RUB 1.5 trillion in 2013, including intangible products (services and trade operations). “Tatarstan’s import substitution potential is most prominent in two fields, the machine building and the chemical industry. The region’s machinery imports currently amount to over $4 bn per […]

According to Bloomberg, OJSC Eurochem intends to get ahead of the potash market leader Uralkali by 2019 thanks to the anticipated launch of two currently developed potash deposits. “We expect both mines to start production by the end of 2017,” said Clark Bailey, Eurochem’s Mining Director, in an interview to the agency. It will take up to two years after that to start exporting potash abroad, said he. The mines currently under construction, one located at the Verkhnekamskoe deposit in the Perm Krai, the other at the Gremyachinskoe deposit in the Volgograd Oblast, are being built in two stages to yield an annual combined output of 8.3 mn tonnes of potash. “Our project boasts a lower cost of construction per tonne of potash capacity than is needed to get a return on investment,” said Mr. Bailey. “Considering the fact that we have a port terminal on the Black Sea, we […]

Vasily Nomokonov, a Managing Director at Sibur, gave a talk at the 21st World Petroleum Congress, describing the global challenges and opportunities faced by Russia’s petrochemistry field. Vasily Nomokonov pointed out that in the last 10 years the country’s petrochemical industry has been keeping ahead of the oil extraction field and the national GDP in terms of growth rate. Petrochemistry’s relative contribution to the GDP grew in this period, highlighting the field’s potential as one of the drivers of the country’s economy. In the years 2010-2013, Sibur’s investment totaled RUB 239 bn, or 78% of its EBITDA for this period. Experts estimate that Russia’s polymer demand will grow by an average of 8% each year in the near-term, based on the current per capita polymer consumption figure for the CIS countries, which is below 20% of the level registered for Germany and the US and is 33.3% less than that of […]
